The story starts off very fast, with the main character, Amos, being given his mysterious quest in the first few pages: deliver the news to the fairy Gwenfadrille that her mermaid friend has died and that she had chosen Amos Daragon to be the Mask Wearer. Can you begin a novel without developing a backstory to the main character? Yes you can, as Amos Daragon proves.
