METAfizzycal fun and prizes

Does Montreal’s Anglo theatre scene crave glamour? You bet. Some 230 artists, critics, friends and loved ones gathered last night in the sumptuous Rialto Theatre for the first annual META ceremony. Tuxedos and gowns were in abundance. Either a lot of people on the indie scene have secret lives, or they’ve kept the costumes from a slew of fancy plays.

Yours truly felt shamefully underdressed in my Lulu Lemon yoga pants, a Mélanie Lane sweater coat and grey stripped scarf plucked carelessly from my husband’s wardrobe on my way out the door. Hostess and presenter Leni Parker, on the other hand, looked stunning in a flowing, aqua, single shoulder-strapped gown and Downton Abbey hairstyle.

Spearheaded by the Quebec Drama Federation, the Montreal English Theatre Awards bestowed some 24 prizes on participants in the 2012-13 theatre season.

I say “some” because there were three important tie situations: all four nominees for outstanding actress received the award. Three of five nominees for outstanding actor won the prize. And three productions shared the award for outstanding ensemble. A peer-reviewed jury system picked the winners, which may explain this dizzying display of generosity.

The METAs replace the MECCAS, a looser and decidedly less glamorous event spearheaded in 2006 by local theatre critics. The MECCAS collapsed two years ago amid acrimonious exchanges over procedure and authority.

With Jane Needles and QDF at the helm, it seems more likely this celebration will continue and flourish.  Rebranded from the old Quebec Drama Festival, QDF has floundered since its decision to drop the annual play festival in 1981. Despite frequently announcing renewal and revivals, the federation has struggled to establish a strong brand or raison d’être. The METAs could change all that.

Here is a list of nominees and winners:

I love the ties. Too often, I think, the format of giving one prize to one winner means having to choose almost arbitrarily between deserving nominees whose merits are different but equally impressive. Good on these juries for having the courage to be generous. We all benefit when we support good art.

As a member of the METAs committee, I was extremely proud of our theatre community on Monday night. We all came out winners! The support and respect for the artists and their work is finally being recognized. Bravo Montreal English Theatre. And a huge thanks to the press for their coverage.
