Vibrantly daring! These two words perfectly describe Melissa Nepton’s Spring/Summer 2012 womanswear collection. The Quebec designer is a graduate of École Supérieure de Mode de Montréal at UQÀM and later studied in Paris. Following that, her experience as a buyer for the Marie Claire Group and Terra Nostra boutiques only enhanced her expertise in the design world.
“Length, colors and fluidity define today’s runway. I infused some peach to the soft tones, used a degrading palette of grays,” said an excited Nepton about the show. “Some will not understand certain elements like the chiffon blouse combined with the carton purse folded several times but that was the point. It still flows.”
She was right. For instance, the kneepad accessory that adorned models’ legs raised some eyebrows, yet those disconnected elements sealed the audience’s fascination with the collection.
Asymmetric cuts, along with wide, loose pants and skirts made for swishy, swing-able comfort and style. Transparency was a main theme, resulting in some very provocative looks. Bare chests could be seen under sleeveless boleros, and a plastic see-through raincoat added a touch of whimsy to a sexy black lace beach dress.
Nepton stays true to her philosophy of designing for the urban woman. The sizzling looks that shone on the runway only scratched the surface of her collection. For those not quite ready to embrace transparent fabrics and lace, more demure, office-appropriate pieces are available. Says Nepton, “The runway is one thing, the entire ready-to-wear is something else. It’s for the everyday active woman. We have evening gowns but many pieces can be worn to work. The materials range from a mixture of silks to a mixture of jerseys and knits. Sport but chic is how I describe it,” said Nepton.
Shoes followed the sport-chic tendency. Basic black and beige wedge platforms in leather and rough fabrics complemented the fluidity of the clothes.
Provocative, romantic, and unconventional – the Melissa Nepton runway show astounded the Bonsecours audience. Her collection is available at Simon’s and other boutiques across the province. Nepton admirers are eagerly waiting for her next surprising assortment of creativity. Until then, time to hit the shops!
